Thursday June 18, 2009: SurfLand Book Signing with artist Joni Sternbach
![]()
SurfLand, a new book of images from Joni Sternbach, will be showcased at a book signing by the photographer on Thursday, June 18, 2009 from 6:00-8:00pm at Kenise Barnes Fine Art at 1955 Palmer Avenue, Larchmont, New York. The hardcover book is published by Photolucida, a non-profit organization founded to promote the best emerging and mid-career artists working with photography today. It’s Critical Mass competition draws upon 200 of the world’s best curators, editors and photography professionals to select its winners. As one of only two winners from the final round of competition edited to a field of 175, Joni Sternbach was awarded the hard cover book, which is being released this June.
Sternbach, who has had a long affiliation with Kenise Barnes Fine Art, captures portraits of surfers in tintype, a 19th-century technique little changed since its invention. The combination of historic process and contemporary subject is a dynamic one, yielding direct, timeless, one-of-a-kind images of individuals standing on the verge of sea and land.
